Starting Your Own Basketball League

Posted on

Basketball is one of the sports that you can play anytime, anywhere, as long as you have one other person or a few friends. Because it's such a versatile and inexpensive sport to play, you can create a basketball league that brings people together for a common goal or purpose.

You'll get a chance to regularly workout while spending time with other people working toward a common goal. Consider these tips so you can get your basketball league off the ground.

Determine a Hook and Reason For Your Basketball League, and Put the Word Out

While people love basketball already, you'll attract more people and find more success if you develop a theme or reason for your league. For instance, the league can be open to young people in a certain city or industry looking to network. Think of it the same as how a lot of business is done on golf courses all over the world.

Once you know this theme, come up with a great name that can be put on a logo or t-shirt, and start by putting the word out to a select group of people to gauge interest. People will be more likely to invest their free time into the league when you show them that it's organized and that it'll be a good time for everyone.

Hire Refs, Buy Uniforms and Have Leaguewide Standards and Rules For Play

You need to go above and beyond to create order and continuity in your league. This means having your league rules drafted in detail, so that all teams, coaches, and players are aware. Have people pay dues or otherwise sign up for the league, so that it is an official decision that involves vetting eligibility.

This way, the participants are laid out in advance, as rosters are set at the beginning of the season. You can require teams to have uniforms, even if it's as simple as a t-shirt. For instance, some leagues use equal love basketball men's t-shirts, while others go for a full uniform.

Above all, make sure that you protect the integrity of the league by having skilled referees. The best way to keep it fair is by hiring refs from a company so that they aren't partial to any team, player or outcome. A referee generally demands payment of about $135 per game, so make sure you have enough money to keep the league going.

Your league will be a success when you follow these tips.
