5 Tips to Shop for Vintage Clothes Like a Pro

Posted on

Style in general was never intended to adhere to some universal standard; it was meant to be all about personality. For this reason, vintage stores offer a great way to find unique, quality pieces that speak directly to your personal style. However, shopping for vintage pieces isn't always simple. There is a craft to vintage shopping. Learn some tips and tricks that can help you find more pieces with less effort.

1. Look in Your Closet

Take a quick glance in your closet before you shop. The goal is to see what pieces you need, such as a great blouse for the new pair of slacks you bought. Having a goal in mind will make your shopping experience easier because you'll know exactly what you're looking for.

2. Dress for Access

Wear comfortable, thin clothing when you shop. Not all vintage shops have the luxury of fitting rooms. A lightweight dress or a pair of lightweight pants, like spandex, and a t-shirt are thin enough to fit under a piece you want to try on without altering its fit significantly. When you find something you want to try on, you'll see how much easier it is with the right clothing.

3. Shop During the Week

Try to find some time in your schedule to shop during the week. Due to work and school schedules, Saturdays and Sundays seem to be the universal days for shopping, which means that more people will be out. The more people out, the harder it is to browse and take your time, and the more likely it is that someone else will grab a great find before you can.

4. Bring Cash

Stop by the ATM and grab some cash at the beginning of the day. Vintage pieces can be found everywhere from well-known retailers to thrift stores to small vintage merchants at a local market. As a result, not everyone will accept card payments. To avoid finding a piece that you love and being unable to pay for it, keep some cash on hand just in case.

5. Find a Great Tailor

Research tailors in your area before you begin your shopping process. Vintage pieces are preloved, which can sometimes mean they've lost some of their natural shapes. They are also typically from a different period, which can translate into design differences when it comes to certain cuts and measurements. A great tailor can transform a piece that doesn't fit quite right into a piece that looks like it was designed just for you.

Let your inner you shine with vintage clothing. Take these tips with you, and you're sure to walk out with an awesome piece.
