Are You Planning A Winter Campout With Your Family?

Posted on

Have you ever camped out with your family during the winter months? If so, you are probably already aware of everything you need to take with you on the camping trip. If this is your first experience in camping during truly cold weather, you might be wondering about the best way to prepare. From shopping at a military surplus store to planning fun activities while you're camping, here are some ideas that might help you.

Military Surplus Store - Maybe you've been told that you can buy pretty much everything you'll need for cold weather camping at one store. It's true. If you've never shopped at a military surplus store you're about to be awed by everything that's available in one place. For example, if you need a large tent, you'll more than likely find one that will hold your entire family, plus essentials that you've brought with you. Even if you buy a large tent for sleeping purposes, consider getting a smaller one that will hold food and your other gear.

Will you be fishing? The military surplus store will probably have all the stuff you need for your fishing adventure. Plan on buying things like flashlights, ice chests, and even warm parkas and other warm clothes you'll need. If you don't already have them, consider buying warm boots for each of your family members. You will more than likely ind them at the military surplus store, too. Take along a first aid kit and cooking equipment, also found at the military surplus store.

Cold Weather Fun - If you end up buying extra warm clothing, consider having a night activity where you can study the stars and where you can look for specific things like The Big Dipper and The Little Dipper. Another fun activity will be right in your tent where you can be nice and warm. Think of telling not-too-scary ghost stories or tell about experiences you had as a youngster when you camped with your family or friends. And, don't forget a sing-along. Even if you can't carry a tune, lead your family in singing songs like She'll Be Coming Around The Mountain. Add to the fun by teaching your kids oldies like Sixteen Tons and other ballads.

If you have purchased a flashlight for each of your children, think of going on a nighttime hike. Be sure to take extra batteries for the flashlights. you can find those at the military surplus store, too.
